BE YOUR OWN FACT CHECKER!

1) Know your news source
You would not ask a stranger for important information. But that's what a lot of people do on the internet. They go to sites they don't know. They read things from sources they don't know.

Is the site you are reading done by a known and respected institution or organization? Does the site tell you the individual or organization who made it?
Carefully read what is written and check where the photos or videos come from. Does the site tell you where it got its information and photos? Does the site give you links to other sites that are good?

📌  Here's a very good example of how to spot a fake news site:
    •
There's ABC News, the television network, with the web address of abcnews.go.com.
    • And there's ABC News, the fake news website, with the web address of abcnews.com.co.

🔎 The use of  ".co"  at the end of a web address is a strong clue you are looking at a fake news website.

📌📌  Here's another good example of how to spot a fake news site:
     • Some fake news sites don't have any contact information. That tells you right away that it's fake. The fake "ABC News" does have a "contact us" page – but it shows a picture of a single-family home in Kansas. The real TV network is in New York City.

2) Fake news makes you feel fear or anger
When you feel a lot of fear or anger, it's hard for you to think clearly. Fake news uses false, distorted, and exaggerated information. The people who write fake news want you to feel afraid and confused.

3) Remember:
 F
ake news has some truth or we would not be tricked by it.
 Fake news increases
 emotions fear, anger, hopelessness.
 When our emotions
are strong, it's hard to think calmly and clearly.
After you read something ask, “Do I feel positive or depressed?”

What is the answer to fake news?
1) Stop reading bad news.
2) Find news sources you can trust.
3) When you read a bad story about a country or people, try to find something good about them from another source.

4) Help stop "fake news" by reading a whole story before you share it.

Use these tools to help you:
1)  Google now labels a story (warns you) when you do a search if it could be fake.

2) There is also the website RealorSatire.com that lets you check any web address. It will then tell you if the web address or story link comes from a fake or biased news website.
